Pikmin 4: What to look FOURward To

The most recent Nintendo Direct gave longtime-Nintendo fans a glimpse of the newest Pikmin 4 game coming to the Switch.

The game was first announced by Shigeru Miyamoto in 2015, but since then, there have been very few updates on its development. There had been speculation that the game may have been canceled or put on hold indefinitely, but after this most recent Nintendo Direct, fans were given hope, a look at the game, and a release date. This year. July 21. The wait is almost over!

Given the lack of official information, it's difficult to say what we can expect from Pikmin 4. However, based on the previous games in the series and the trailer, we can assume that the game will still  involve using the tiny plant-like creatures to explore and solve puzzles in a whimsical, colorful world. It also appears to include new Pikmin types, features, and gameplay mechanics to freshen up the experience.

Red Pikmin appear to be able to withstand Fire and the new “Ice” Pikmin can freeze enemies as well as bodies of water to help traverse the terrain and solve puzzles.

The newest addition to the game is Oatchi, a small bipedal “space dog” that pals around with you and your Pikmin to help conquer enemies and overcome challenges. Quickly becoming a fan favorite, Oatchi is a cute doggo that fans can’t wait to play with.

As far as enemies go, you and your Pikmin face off against the usual suspects in addition to some newer looking reskinned versions of the enemies with various powers and abilities. Some are more terrifying looking than the others. Boss battles seem to be about the same with some familiar looking creatures with new twists.

It’s been about a decade since Pikmin 3 was released for the Wii U. Pikmin 3 Deluxe came out for the Switch in 2020 which offered enhanced gameplay, extra side missions, a multiplayer mode, and more. But it only left fans of the series wanting a proper sequel for their beloved puzzle solving game. Thankfully, they won't be waiting much longer as Pikmin 4 is due out July 21st. There’s been no pre-order bonuses or collectors versions announced yet, but with the game coming out in 6 months it's unlikely that one will be announced.
