Hidden Indie Games of October

From the depths of the Steam release calendar, here are games that deserve your attention.

Cultic

Cultic is a highly anticipated old school action game where you are dragged from your own grave and forced to fight through the ranks of a twisted cult to find freedom. It blends Doom-like 2D graphics with 3D animations for a fast-paced, explosion filled adventure.

From the steam page:

CULTIC gives you the freedom to approach combat your way. You can run in guns blazing, running, jumping, sliding, and dodging to keep out of harms way. If you prefer a slower approach, you can lay traps, let your enemies come to you, and pick them off from the safety of cover. Maybe you prefer to weave in between your foes, leading their attacks towards each other, and turning them against one another. With a full arsenal of mid-century firearms and explosives, you'll be well equipped to slaughter everything in your path - provided you don't get slaughtered first.

Cultic releases on Steam on the 13th of October.

Scorn

A game fit for the month of its release, Scorn lets you experience a silent adventure in a lost civilization. Surrounded by biomechanical contraptions and machines, you will have to use your wits and make wise choices to survive in this hostile landscape. Neither the residents or the game will let you survive your mistakes.

Scorn is available to pre-order with a 10% discount until the 21st of October and fully releases on Game Pass, PC, and Xbox on the 14th of October.

The gameplay is almost infinitely customisable. Each Bibot you choose will unlock a different play style, each gun can be changed to your liking, and as you progress, you are able to choose a specialisation to truly make each playthrough unique and your own.

The life of Arthur

Have you ever thought: “Man, I really wish I could get into the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer, but his books don’t have enough anime for me!”?

No?

Well here it is anyway.

You are a student seeking forbidden knowledge, and through your quest and your moral decisions, you end up learning more than you had ever wanted to.

Your decisions will decide Arthur’s fate, so choose wisely.

The life of Arthur releases on Steam on the 3rd of October.

Dread

A demon screaming with a bloody mouth wearing a blue lace night cap

Dread is an online multiplayer paranormal investigation simulator much like Phasmophobia. Your clients will pay for evidence, and push you to risk your own safety and that of your group for compensation. But be careful, not everyone is your ally, and a little possession can cause your teammates to change sides.

Dread releases on Steam on the 4th of October.

The Plague Doctor of Wippra

In another game which reflects our reality perhaps a bit too well, in The Plague Doctor of Wippra, you incarnate a doctor fighting against the plague in a mediaeval setting. Rumours and pseudo medicine are believed more than science, and you have to fight against the people and nature to ensure your patients’ survival.

Choose wisely, as each decision you make will have an effect on the conclusion of your story.

The Plague Doctor of Wippra releases on Steam on the 5th of October

Priest Simulator

In Priest Simulator, you play a priest who fights evil with *checks notes*, a Christmas lights bedazzled bat, lasers, and force gloves.

As one does.

This is not a game to take seriously. It is a ‘grab a beer and laugh along with the game’ type of experience where the absurd is here to stay. You shall perform exorcisms, recruit a vampire, and renovate your church to be the best it can be.

Priest Simulator releases on Steam on the 6th of October.

Skala

Skala is a simple, minimalistic game in which you use the scaling of both your environment and your character to solve puzzles. Ideal for a couple of hours of relaxing gameplay.

Skala will be free on both Steam and Itch.io when it releases on the 4th of October.

Blood Nova

In a point and click game straight out of an 80s comic book, Blood nova tells the story of Love, a galactic princess who is forced to take over her kingdom when her mother abdicates. Dark forces are also against her ascension, and while stuck in a lighthouse in the vastness of space, Love and her friend Kel have to fight for their lives.

With a demo already available to play, Blood Nova releases on Steam on the 5th of October.

Abeyance

Abeyance is a story-driven science fiction roguelike. You incarnate Ezra, an amnesiac in the fallout of an intergalactic war. You are hired by the recovery syndicate to recover items and data from lost ships and buildings. As you recover your memories, you will have to battle both your cerebral implants and your inner demons to recover your humanity.

Abeyance will release on Steam on the 7th of October

Stay tuned for the second half of releases later in the month, and happy gaming!
